Why defining your target audience drives results
Knowing exactly who you want to reach is the secret to successful marketing.
Yet so many entrepreneurs don’t take the time to construct an audience profile, which leads to muddled messages later.
If you want to hit the bullseye with your marketing, you need to understand your customers on a number of dimensions, including their needs and interests.
So where should you start?
1) Start by gathering data on your audience.
Look for patterns in age, location, interests, and motivations.
It’s useful to sketch out demographics and personal details such as where they live, the type of job they have, their educational level, and what media they consume, especially if you have a physical product to sell.
2) Figure out what makes your customers tick. Get inside their heads.
What keeps them up at night?
What are some challenges they are facing, especially as it relates to your product or service?
How can you solve a problem for them?
What or who inspires them?
What do they dream about?
By sketching out their psychographics, you’ll better understand the value systems and beliefs that drive their decision-making.
One word of warning: do not assume that you are just like your target audience.
It is tempting and easy to take that route, but to write messaging that lands, you need to take the time to walk in your customers’ shoes and not assume that you know their preferences.
3) Interview customers.
Use the questions and criteria you’ve developed above and ask them directly. Be genuinely curious.
You may be surprised at their answers (in a good way) since they often reveal information you would have never guessed on your own.
4) Put it all together.
Use these all of these insights to help you make informed choices about your marketing channels and the messages you craft to communicate.
The more you refine your audience profile, the easier it becomes to empathize with them and connect your service as the solution to the problem they are experiencing.
You’ll be better positioned to create messages that feel personal, spark engagement, and inspire action.
